Orientation
When I went to the Arts High School in Newark on Friday November 1st I was in shock. First of all I always thought of Newark to be such a bad area to be in, but really where the school is located it’s not too bad of an area. I was amazed on how big the school is and with such few students enrolled in it. The unique thing about the school is that it’s a public school and you have to audition to get in it. It was a lot different then my High School. My High School, the only thing the same was we had blocked scheduling, but even that was a little different. They made there block scheduling to fit there requirement for that school. I was also surprised on how nice and welcoming the students and faculty were. Everywhere I turned there was always someone introducing themselves and just being very polite. The classes were different then my High School, in my school each class was a mixture of freshman, sophomores, juniors and even seniors, but in the Arts High School each class was just a freshman class, just a sophomore class, just a junior class, just a senior class. I thought that was pretty cool. I couldn't believe the amount of talent there was in this school. They also had a class for everything it was crazy, our tour guide was like this is the arts section and they had a pottery class, a clay class, a sketch class, a painting class so on and so on where in my school it was all don’t in the same class as one elective. Then when we went up a level they had music classes for every different instrument when in my school if you wanted to play an instrument we practiced all together in one big room. Then when you go up another level that’s where the math, chemistry, English classes are and then there was one more level up, but I didn’t get a chance to go up there because I had to leave. I definitely had a great experience being at that school and I can’t wait to go back and shadow a teacher.

I agree with you, it was a shock to see Arts High School! It was so nice, and everybody was so polite that I could not believe I was in Newark. It was an eye-opener definitely because we have this idea of what Newark is like, and I was so wrong. We cannot assume that what we see on television is accurate or the truth. The media tends to exagerate and focus on the negative aspects of communities. What a pity!
Well, visiting that school really inspires me to become a teacher, not only because the school is a nice place to teach, or because everybody is so welcoming and friendly there; it is because is shows me that there is hope for having quality education in urban communities. There is hope that those kids that live in poor homes and with a variety of social problems will choose to attend school and prepare for the future instead of joining gangs or getting involved in criminal activities. There is hope that the new generations will have a better future, thanks to teachers and administrators who are qualified and who care about them.
